Went to The Outer Banks,NC last summer and they were "refurbishing" the beach. We didn't mind the tropical storm or the ceiling falling down but when they barricaded our oceanfront beach with pipes, I was upset. We had a 4 and 7 y/o who just wanted to play on the beach. We asked if the local municipality could at least give us a sand bridge to get to the water they said they would be moving in a day or two. They moved the pipes but then barricaded the beach with heavy equipment. We had about a day and a half of good beach time and paid thousands for it. I really felt bad for all the families and little ones who had hoped to have a great time in Kitty Hawk, NC.

Boy, that is the truth! I have decided to only travel with family from now on. Another lesson I learned!

Peewee...true, true, true! The test of a good marriage is this. I never knew travel was actually "fun" until I remarried. LOL

That was pretty much the end of that marriage.

When I was a kid, we went on a family vacation. on the second day, my father almost drown and had to be rescued. Two days latter, he had a heart attack. We spent the whole time at the hospital and in a god awful motel in the middle of Maine. I was only 15. My mother was a wreck and my brother and I were miserable. The entire trip sucked.

Loved it all when I was a kid, but once you are the one having to keep them entertained while it pours...yeh...not much fun at all.

One time at Camp, the director snuck into my bunk and tried to grab me. It was horrifying. He had not bathed in weeks and I needed to brush my teeth

Yep!
It was a school vacation to a different province. Unfortunately the school was very unorganized and somehow me and a group of 4 ended up getting lost. We were staying at a hotel (mind you this was grade 7, so everyone's all hyped and immature lol!) and we were surrounded by various shops, sweets, bakeries, cafes, and a couple fast food chains. The teachers who were supervising two entire classes (30-40 kids) were huddled in their own group, and decided to let everyone wander around the streets of this completely strange town, and go get supper.
We were to meet back at the hotel within 2 hours.

So myself and a group of 4 all decided to check out a bakery, where we got sweets. We then went for a walk and somehow got lost. By this time it was nearly 8pm at night, and we were supposed to be back at the hotel but none of us had any idea where it was! We were asking people, but since it was a french community, and our french knowledge was VERY limited, we had no idea where to go. We did our best to remember, and ended up stopped in front of a fancy cafe.
The owner was a large man, who stepped out of the door way and offered my group (all of us young girls at the age of 12/13) some discounted food if we would come inside his cafe, since it was not busy. There was only two customers inside, and this man was dressed in a black tie suit!
We were freaked out, and politely said no thanks. We didn't want to ask him directions because he was creepy, and really persistent in wanting us all to come into his quiet cafe.

We continued walking and one of the girls began balling, she was so upset. We all tried to cheer her up, but we were freaking out inside lol. It was scary!
Night had settled, and none of us had any teachers phone numbers, we only had 1 cell phone between the 4 of us, and it was for emergencies only. Which was great IF WE HAD GOTTEN THE HOTEL OR TEACHERS NUMBERS LOL

We kept wandering, trying to back track and it was like 9:30pm now, we were so lost. We decided to get some food since we didn't eat much at all that day. We stopped at Subway, and a staff member came over who spoke English luckily, and asked where we all were from. We explained we were on a school trip, and the staff member didn't seem to care. She informed us Subway closes at 10, and we need to be out in a half hour.
Of course we rushed to eat our food, and ended up forgetting something important behind, the only bag we stored all our wallets in! We decided in case we got mugged, we'd pile all our money into one fanny pack, and kind of circle the girl who was carrying it. Well she left it in the washroom at Subway! So now we had NO money, and NO cell phone and NO direction of where we were going!

Finally, an officer on duty saw the group of us youngins walking around a strange city at 10pm at night, wondering why the hell we were out so late. We explained what happened, and that poor officer was probably so overwhelmed at the time. He has us each stand silent and one at a time we could talk and explain ourselves.
Eventually, he lead us back to the hotel, which was all the way on the SOUTH end of the city, we had walked so far we were in a completely different location and side of the city.
When we got back to the hotel, the teachers were all worried, all the students were calling our names, trying to search for us. A few students came running over to hug us as soon as they found us, and the teachers were of course NOT impressed.

The rest of the week vacation trip, the group and I were not allowed to leave the hotel without a teacher present with us. We were not to attend any of the daily events planned, because they assumed we got lost on purpose to do our own thing and get out of the school schedule.

Other things that happened during the trip that were terrible:
- We squished a marshmallow into the peep hole of our room door, so the teachers couldn't see us, and we got charged 40 dollars to get it fixed since we broke the glass. LOL
- I broke the coffee maker by trying to make a Mr. Noodles in the coffee pot.
- We got in trouble for showering after hours, apparently you're not allowed to shower at 2am in that hotel!
- Our teacher couldn't wake us, and had to get the room attendant to open our room door, since no one was waking up. Of course this did not go over well
- I threw a melon ball at my friend playfully, and hit a blind man in the side of the head by his ear. He got angry and of course us being immature, we laughed and ran squealing away to our room.
- My friend fell down a flight of stairs since we were racing up the fire exit. VERY slippery
and finally
- I ended up chipping a tooth because I slipped getting onto the bus, and smacked my face against the step.
It was horrible, but definitely made for a memorable trip.

I remember one very miserable family vacation where it rained every day. It was a beach vacation and the rent was not cheap. We had no clothes dryer to even get the dampness out of our clothes and towels. When it's wet down the shore, nothing dries!

I had two miserable kids with me that just added to the tension. We ended up cutting the vacation short and going home.
