It depends. There are a lot of people that will block because they cant handle any kind of debate or criticism. They take a stance (on a site like this) and then when someone argues the other side, with facts, they get all flustered or annoyed or maybe they simply are intellectually honest enough to admit their position is flawed.

But there are also times when you are faced with an a-hole who brings on value to the conversations or the community.

On the internet... yes, it's stupid. I wish I could do it in real life though. There was a kid on a flight I was on last night that I wish I could have blocked.

I think the old SodaHeads are able to debate without blocking. We had such a good thing there and never thought of losing our good friends. So glad to see some of the old gang.

Depends, I suppose. I haven't blocked anyone in a while. I take that back- there was a doctor that I strongly disagreed with on Facebook. So I blocked him. There was no way he was changing his mind on a subject and I didn't f eel the stress of seeing his posts were worth it.

It can be.. but hey it's their right to. Why should you talk to someone you don't enjoy talking to?

Here we go again. No. It is not for "wussies". In real life, outside of work you can choose not associate with people you dont like. Why should the digital world be any different? Who cares if some one blocks you.. it is their loss.

Like many things, it depends. For example, on this site a new member (well I guess we are all new) (I wont give a name as I dont believe that is fair) blocked me after I disagreed with an opinion. I supported my opinion with valid reasoning and facts. I was clear, objective, adult, and respectful. No name calling, no offensive behavior. I simply disagreed... on an opinion site.

To me, that is silly.

And, I agree that in the real world you can choose who you associate with, so why not online. But in the real world if you were standing around in a group of people and you posed a question, you really couldnt flat out ignore or refuse to let speak someone you didnt agree with. Just imagine how childish that would look? It is the equivalent of putting your fingers in your ears and yelling "I dont hear you, I dont hear you"

So, if you are being harrassed, by all means block. But just because you disagree with someone.. on an opionion site... silly.

Not always but most of the time it is imho. Some might block because of real harassment but most do it for an echo chamber effect. Honestly I think sites are better when they don't have a block feature.

"but most do it for an echo chamber effect".

You'll find there are several here who engage in this practice

I wish more sites would do away with it. It really just creates more socking and hate trolling in reality.

I like SW though I was on the fence for a long while.... I agree though, that OP deletion option is beyond retarded. Lately it seems most of the babies who used it are leaving. Pretty much it's that nation Northwest who uses it.

I like debate and I don't mind differing views. I have strong views on some things. I know others have differing views. That's ok. What's not ok is name calling, harassment or bullying. If a person is calling names I'll just ignore them. If they are harassing someone else or me I'll ask them to stop. If it continues I may block them depending on how bad it is. Bullying is a hard no. I'll block and report a bully. I've only blocked one here but they were bullying someone. They followed that person on to one of my posts calling them by name. I blocked and reported.

Yes, unless you are being personally harrassed.
A truly annoying and childish thing to do is to block someone, then make Comments or Posts about them so they cannot respond. Clearly there are many instances of that here on this site.

The purposes of "Blocking" is to break off or disengage from contact with that person. Clearly blocking someone then ragging about them is childish, cowardly, and represpresent insecurity when done in this manner. I have blocked. I admit it, because I was being threatened & harassed

I am being blocked by two on here. In neither case does it make sense. For what, disagreeing?

In both cases I made sure to not block them in return. They are free to comment on my posts, reply to me, etc.

No John...you are being blocked because the Site auto-blocks.. We did not initiate this block and EVERYONE knows this.

What you're saying is that you are the SITE police. LOLOLOLOL
YOU ARE SHEP!
We all know it. You have at least three profiles here and you are using this one to block ANYONE who is a A Liber/Progressive or a friend of one to make some tye of statement.

76May for example. WHy would you ever block a lady as sweet as her?
If you are saying 76MAY's behavior is very contemptuous, and seemingly intentional and that you believe she meekly supports contemptuous behavior, then you are a fat liar. You really should quit the site and the internet,

Shep. You are pathetic and stop saying you aren't Him.

I say no to blocking.
