Francis Bellamy wrote the Pledge of Allegiance as part of a brilliant marketing scheme to sell US Flags

Gotta love the original POA. I'm surprised conservatives haven;t pushed for restoring the original aslute. As a Progressive, I'm glad they persevered and got that change

That doesnt make it a devious act, though, if that is the point. Take a look at your favorite pundit, whether that be Limbaugh, Maher, or someone lesser known. Its easy to say they are just marketing themselves to make money, but does that mean they dont also have a valid purpose in mind and believe they are doing good?

The pledge is a positive thing. Having pride in country is a positive thing, not a negative.

Meh. I disagree. Forcing people to do something is nothing more than tyranny
Adding "God" to it makes it Fascist Tyranny

Smart kid

Truthfully, I have no problem either, but I don't agree with it being mandatory and I certainly do not beliueve in people being punished because they don't do it or they would rather take a knee.

Fascist Tyranny. Simply words tossed around without a hint of meaning. It is "tyranny" how exactly? And *especially* how is the world is it by any stretch "Fascist?" A clear and concise explanation/definition would be most most helpful if you even want to be taken with a semblance of seriousness. As it stands, you are merely blathering.

He is a smart kid. His biggest problem with the pledge is the words "under God". He is aware that many people have different meanings of God and some dont believe at all. He also thinks that forcing kids to say this conflicts with separation of Church and State. He is quite capable of forming his own opinions and discussing them openly and rationally.

Not saying he isn't smart...but I do suspect the subject was discussed in the classroom.

It had been discussed between himself and his peers. As they do say it everyday. With the teacher? Not really. We have had discussions on Stem Cells ( he was doing a research paper a couple of years ago). Religion, Government and Voting, Abortion.. the creation of Scooby Do, Drugs, Overwatch and the MCU.

I'm with you zombie. It surely never hurt me and I still get a lump in my throat standing for the Pledge. I think most Patriots feel this way.

Well that's good on y'all, but you have no right nor does our governement to foce someone to stand and say the pledge of allegiance. I thought conservatives stood for Freedom and Liberty?

Someone that's loyal to their Country. I come from a military family and appreciate the freedom and safety we have. Not perfect but still a work in progress.

Okay. But one who does not recite the pledge is not necessarily loyal to their country and vice versa. And being forced to pledge allegiance to something, whether it is the flag or a president or the national anthem is decidedly unamerican.

I like it here, too. I also like living in a place where I do not need to do something because someone tells me I need to to prove my loyalty.

If you want my opinion on that, here it is...

See that? That is Freedom and Liberty!

If it makes you happy go burn all the flags you can find. I will respect my Flag and my Country 'til the bitter end. What makes me sad is you've probably never served anyone but yourself. It's very rewarding.

You've self-identified your problem - you lack sufficient intelligence and discernment to understand even the words you **attempt** to use. You fail.

Guess what sister, I did serve my country . Trump didn't. He dodged the draft 6 times. Disgusting!
I bet most of the people here claiming didn't, either.
FYI, I am not saying I burn flags. I'm saying I love that I live in a country where I have the freedom and liberty to do so.
The day you or anyone else tells me I can't I'll burn or deface every flag I see. '
Freedom of speech, Freedom to express. You are free to be offended.
Dumb-ass Shep fails to understand that too, but I';m not telling him to shut up

When I grew up, we all loved America and were proud to say it every day. Especially the immigrants. It's only been fashionable to start openly hating America in the last 10 years or so.

Is forcing children to recite the multiplication tables brainwashing? Or, teaching math?

Ain't nothing wrong in teaching math or pride and allegiance to their country.

The flag is a symbol of a homeland. Nobody pledges allegiance to a piece of cloth. It's a SYMBOL.
Brainwashing? Maybe. I can tell you that it never brainwashed me, because I never paid attention to it.
