I think I would look for anybody in a tough time period, like a war, depression or something to really get a sense of how much people in those times had to struggle and appreciate what we have now.

Agreed. To go back in time and not learn anything would be like using our phones for surfing the net and looking at pics of the Kardashians.

Interesting point, but remember that what you know today is because of them. You very well could (In the grand scheme of temporal mechanics and paradoxes) be the one who plants the ideas for the concepts and inventions pertaining to practical electrical usage and photography in Thomas Edison's head
